100 Questions for Artists
questionnaire by Stupied
- 1.) Introduce yourself! What kind of art do you make?
- I'm my. I think you met me already. I am mostly drawing girls and things.
- 2.) How long have you been making art?
- Since I was a little kid. The motivation for it has changed over time. One of my earliest memories is of when I used to get a sheet of printer paper, draw a line to represent the ground, and draw ponies on it. One day in school I had the big brain thought that that's not how things actually look, and I should draw the ponies on the ground in perspective instead of on a line. A girl immediately asked me why the ponies were inside the ground and not on the ground.
Besides that my mum likes to regale me with a story where I went to some art thingy as a kid, I don't remember how old I was. They took nice black and white pictures of me. I painted rainbows, and big flowers, and also faces. Apparently drawing faces at the age I was then is very impressive? I don't know if my mum likes to tell me this story as if it meant I was a prodigy, or displays my innate interests in art, or that it was probably autism probably...
- 3.) How many hours do you spend for each piece?
- It depends but quite a long time, maybe around 6 hours for a serious piece? I don't actually know lol.
- 4.) Do you prefer taking your time or do you like to quickly move on to the next thing?
- I like to go into a comfy zen state over a lot of the process and enjoy it, so i'm not really rushing. The gap between my rough doodles and completed pieces in time and effort exerted is pretty high. I try to force myself to do something more in the middle every now and again.
- 5.) When do you decide a piece is finished?
- When I've let it sit for a few days so the flavours settle.
- 6.) What part of the creation process do you enjoy the most?
- I like details, both drawing and rendering them.
- 7.) What part of the creation process do you dislike the most?
- I don't know... I have fun...
- 8.) Do you have a designated workstation or do you just work wherever?
- My compooper. My desk is pretty big and cool. i wanted it to be big so I could both have space for my pc and making stuff. It's from Ikea :)
- 9.) Do you monetize you work or is it purely a hobby?
- I don't think the reasons I draw in particular are very compatible with what would be required to consistently work for money.
- 10.) Where do you share your work? On social media or a personal websites? Do you keep to yourself and close friends?
- Here... I like tumblr. I never really gained anything positive from other social media sites, even when the engagement was good in numbers, the way people speak on sites like X drives me up the wall.
- 11.) What's an aspect of your art you enjoy?
- It's my own expression and what is meaningful to me, I guess.
- 12.) What are things you would like to improve on?
- Perspective, drawing animals, making things look "decorated" without being cluttered or disjointed, always can improve overall, but I am happy with how much my anatomy and art style has come along in the last few years.
- 13.) Are you self-taught or had formal education?
- The former... I can't survive in the real world..
- 14.) Do you research about old techniques or stick to newer ones?
- I have found that certain things click with my brain, and certain things do not. I wouldn't say I rely on any existing guide as they are not something that my brain has formed organically by observing. So thats what I like to do.
- 15.) What do you value more, experimentation or mastery?
- Uhh, both are valuable I think. That sounds like a copout awnser, but it's true. Sometimes i'm like "damn, I need to study more" and sometimes i'm like "damn, I need to just make some random thing"
- 16.) Do you practice drawing from the arm? What other art techniques to you practice?
- I remember reading about this but I don't. Maybe it would be good to try. I think my "hand" is weird overall lol.
- 17.) How frequently do you do studies?
- If I am feeling stagnant.
- 18.) Do you understand color theory? How'd you learn or do you want to?
- Kind of? I generally know which colours are complimentary and have an awareness of the kinds of illusions that can emerge with certain colours. Always something I could be better at. I do envy the ability to create a tangible atmosphere with just basic colours and shapes. I hope I can do this some day.
- 19.) Favorite color(s)?
- When it comes to art: Saturated blue, dark red, pinks and purples... mhm, its mainly those. Even though green is my favourite. More green.
- 20.) Are there colors you avoid? Do you think ugly colors exists?
- I don't know about avoiding anything. I like colourful things. I like rainbows and spring flowers. Thats all the colours... all of them...
- 21.) Can you do perspective?
- Noh... perspective is such a pain in the ass, because perspective inherently looks stupid even in real life sometimes. So you kind of have to break the rules to make things look good sometimes. Nobody wants to draw like, a view looking up someones nose like you turned on your front camera on your phone unexpectedly right? It's goofy and confusing.
- 22.) Do you like doing lineart? How do you go about it?
- Kinda. I think things develop a lot more organically if I keep the lines a bit messy and paintover the details. I don't restrict myself to lines.
- 23.) Do you have multiple unfinished projects? Will you ever get to finishing them?
- no ❤︎
- 24.) How do you start a new piece? Do you have a plan or just figure it along the way?
- Sometimes an image just appears in my head and I have to draw it NOW and I don't faff around with sketches. Otherwise it's always beneficial to at least do a few sketches and rough colours first.
- 25.) How do you handle art block?
- Studies... sometimes it's best to just chill for a while though. It is often associated with negative feelings (stress. always just stress.) that can be solved otherwise rather than forcing it.
- 26.) Do you listen to music or watch something while working?
- Music yes. Sometimes a gaming stream. Often lately just rain or noise ambience. If I am so focused I forget about it, it's a good time.
- 27.) When are you most motivated to create? In the morning or evening? Rainy or sunny?
- It's good to get started during the day, but I've started some good things at night too. Rainy days are nice for reasons previously stated.
- 28.) Are your sketchbooks messy or aesthetically pleasing?
- Absolute mess lol. It's unavoidable. But that's just how I am.
- 29.) Do you like showing sketchbooks to others?
- NO
- 30.) Do you have any art friends? IRL or online?
- no ❤︎
- 31.) Do you collaborate frequently with your friends? Is there something you'd like to work on together?
- ( ‘• ω • `)
- 32.) Have you created art to gift to others? How do feel about parting away from your work?
- Yes. It's nice to have those memories conncected to the art I guess.
- 33.) Have you drawn for someone else? Like commissions or requests? Did you enjoy it?
- Yes. When I played ffxiv a few people I knew in my fc paid me for art. I don't think I was very good at it, but it was fun, and I remember those times vividly.
- 34.) How's your posture?
- It used to be worse, if you can believe it.
- 35.) Have you ever been injured making art?
- I've gotten a sore wrist before, but culminatively between gaming and drawing.
- 36.) What's a medium of art you've wanted to try / currently attempting?
- I have always wanted to try a fiber art. I want to try embroidery. The textural sensory element of fiber artworks is very attractive to me.
- 37.) Do you prefer stylized or realistic art?
- Stylized absolutely.
- 38.) Do you like hyper-realistic art?
- not really... it's impressive sure, but that's all the feeling I get. When someone who doesn't draw at all expresses themself, I'm more interested in that than someone who is immensely skilled but only draws like, photorealistic celebrity portraits or the sort of thing normies lose it over.
- 39.) Do you like abstract art?
- I saw some artworks by Hilma af Klint, and I understood what she was trying to say immediately, so I suppose I do.
- 40.) How do you feel about fine art?
- Well it's a part of history... there are certainly beautiful and inspiring fine art works.
- 41.) How do you feel about outsider art? Do you think you fall in that category?
- I wonder lol. I think anyone taking this test would be too whim to influence to really count.
- 42.) Do you follow art trends?
- No I hate people.
- 43.) Do you think your art is influenced by what's currently popular?
- I am actively uninterested in most things that are currently popular because it would inevitably expose me to painful feelings.
- 44.) Do you compare yourself with others? Does it affect you negatively?
- I think everyone does. Nowadays I'm just taking a little piece of everything I see that is inspiring with me. I'm not really yearning to achieve a particular artist's qualities or style. I was more like this when I was a teenager.
- 45.) Your controversial art take?
- i think art is fun and i always have fun and enjoy the journey and process and if you don't and just Complain and Complain and Complain at how much making art sucks then well. You shouldn't be doing it. I go insane when people say things like that and then they get so popular. What are you doing. Even the times I am actively struggling to achieve something, I can't say things like this.
- 46.) Art related pet peeves?
- ouuughh... I can't say that....
- 47.) Who or what are your inspirations?
- various artists, nature and fashion (boring awnser)
- 48.) What's an art piece / artist you wished got more attention?
- Sometimes some really obscure artist on pixiv or somewhere will get my attention. And I download their whole gallery nowadays because else they always disappear. But they're always drawing questionable shit. I'm always vibing with people who draw questionable shit. Help me. Anyway this is my opportunity to show you some thta lived in my head rent free forever. But only the non-questionable ones. Because I won't be responsible for exposing you to that. Not right now or here anyway.
lepi artist who loves Chiyuri and Yumemi from the pc98 touhou games to the point they are basically her ocs. Soulful. Has a neocities page.
Longan amazingly skilled traditional artist who draws beautiful ornate masterpieces on a regular basis, somehow.
okutokoro her touhou drawings made me gay when I was like 14 so I am linking the touhou tag on her tumblr. She used to have a website with even more stuff which is how I found her as a kid but it wasn't fully archived iirc... anyway I still think about that a lot... I swear I found her current blog but the current wordpress one is down...
穴子 love her colours, compositions and stylized anatomy. It's like she took everything about chinese socmed art norms and turned it up to 11.
- 49.) Have you touch grass recently? Do you go out frequently or do you spend most of your time indoors?
- I go out at least once a week and touch sheep poop. But I like my own space.
- 50.) Do you create art daily?
- No. Maybe there were times in the past that I did..
- 51.) Do you take breaks from creating? How frequently?
- When I have a persistent art block there's no point in shoving through it, it's fine.
- 52.) Do you set deadline for your work?
- Woah, who does that... scary...
- 53.) Do you archive your work? Do you keep old pieces?
- I guess. I don't throw physical pieces away. I like to look back at them. I could have done a better job keeping some drawings I made as a teenager, and I regret that a bit.
- 54.) Are you embarrassed of your old work? Or are you indifferent by it?
- Over time things get embarassing, then eventually become too old, and I can just look at them fondly because I've change so much as a person.
- 55.) Do you seek out for criticism? How do you handle feedback?
- I like to recieve it. If it is a thoughtful comment then it's always good to hear. It only feels frustrating if it is something I am already aware of lol.
- 56.) Are you harsh on your own work? Or do you love your work despite all it's flaws?
- Like I said about being embarassed, it depends how old it is. I like doing it, so I like that it exists. I guess it is a personal feeling apart from whether or not I think it is good or not. That must be up to someone else.
- 57.) Do you get compliments frequently? How do feel about them?
- If it is something thoughtful and I feel like I was able to communicate something, then I'm really happy. I don't like annoying comments like the kind people say in all caps on X that don't mean anything. I don't really know if I get them frequently because I don't know what frequently for me would be...
- 58.) How do feel about the rise of generative AI? Do you use it for getting ideas or references?
- AI is interesting. When AI was in a more primitive state I liked the dreamy images it came up with. I thought it was interesting to "see" a dreamed up image from an algorithm's eyes. It is just a data noise pattern. The second people act like that is at all equivelant to a human's artwork is where it stops making sense. The things an algorithm dreams of are then considered unwanted errors, but that is literally what it is; but then trying to fix that problem results in an overtrained incestuous model, and it breaks in a different way. AI is just unfit for the purposes that it is forced into. It has no other purpose than to hallucinate, which might be interesting, and might say something about the person who is seeing/reading it, but doesn't say anything by itself. It really needs to be regulated.
- 59.) How do feel about tracing? What about tracing 3d models to streamline art process?
- Tracing can be useful for learning. I think directly traced 3d model figures look bad and it's very obvious when it's being done. The things I personally enjoy about seeing drawings of the body in particular are lost when someone traces a rudimentary model directly. That being said purposeful inclusion of 3d models can be good and look good, especially for backgrounds and props. But it has to be purposeful.
- 60.) Drop you art resources!
- I like to save interesting images and art I find and use those for references, inspiration, studies etc. You should collect a lot of stuff like that too. Tumblr is good for finding textural and aesthetic things. WAIT. I do have something specific. check this out. Tag on a blog full of cool armored and costume/larp women. You will never be lost for a cool woman to draw ever again.
- 61.) Do you prefer making fanart or original content?
- It takes a bit of time to perfect drawing a canon character how I would like, as some happy medium of my own style and what I like about their canon appearance, so sometimes I'm hesitant to do it unless I really really love the character lol. If you designed a character yourself, you don't have to go through that. Am I lazy...
- 62.) Do you think original content are more creative than fanart?
- I think it's most important to love the thing you are drawing passionately. If someone draws fotm shit for engagement without putting their own heart into it that's boring. But if your feelings are genuine and uninhibited it doesn't matter. They can be just as important. I guess that matters more to me than creativity.
- 63.) Do you strive for originality?
- I strive to express myself.
- 64.) Do you draw from imagination or heavily rely on references?
- I would love to only use my imagination, but it's good to reference things.
- 65.) Do you think using references is a crutch?
- Is having eyes to see a crutch....
- 66.) Do you like to make mood boards or scroll through Pinterest?
- I guess I already awensered this under resources. pureref is a great program over any website. I like to make a big "map" of images loosely organized by vibes, and also references for characters and things I have learned and want to remember.
- 67.) Does your work have a story behind them or do you just make things that you think look neat?
- Maybe not a detailed story. It's going to emerge anyway just by making art.
- 68.) Do you think art should have a purpose?
- If it expresses something then it has it's purpose.
- 69.) Favorite aesthetic?
- I'm so over labels nowadays. I'm into stained glass lately.
- 70.) Do you have a muse or a theme you fall back to?
- Zero finalfantasy....
- 71.) If you could eat you art, what would it taste like?
- Fungus (nonspecific)
- 72.) If your work suddenly became sentient, would it adore or hate you?
- I think it would simply want to live its life.
- 73.) Based on previous question, can you win in a fist fight against it?
- Maybe. It's an even match.
- 74.) Is your art style consistent? Do you prefer making a wide variety of art?
- I like to try a bit of everything. My art style has changed a lot, but comes around back to the same elements at the same time.
- 75.) Do you revisit old concepts or sketches? Do you touch em up or leave them as is?
- If something has an annoyingly simple fix I will not be able to hold back no matter how old it is. Redrawing is fun but I haven't done it in a while, maybe I should do that.
- 76.) Do you believe in talent or is it all skill?
- Much like nature and nurture it's a bit of both, but leans nurture.
- 77.) What's your favorite thing to draw / make? Do you prefer making living things or still life?
- Me when I make my hommunculus
- 78.) Do you create your art with a specific audience in mind? Who?
- Me.
- 79.) How do you feel about people taking inspiration from work? Do you think art style theft is real?
- It frustrates me when I see someone mimic a single art style wholesale because that's boring. If you're going to mimic, you should at least mimic a range of art styles and make that your skill so it's impressive lol, I saw a few artists like that.
- 80.) Do you participate in art conventions? Do you sell your work or support everyone else?
- No because I wouldn't be able to deal with that.
- 81.) Are you art materials expensive? Do you hoard any tools?
- Assuming this is about analog materials, I think the most expensive thing I own are some £30 oil pastels. I would like some fancy oil pastels some day. The grey super sculpey I use is £14 a block and I can make many things from it. I guess I don't hoard things lol, they're meant to be used.
- 82.) Do you organize you supplies and tools systematically?
- Uhh, they're all in the top drawer next to my desk. And my clay is somewhere else. It's not systematic if it's just "put everything in this place" I guess lol.
- 83.) Do you clean up after a project? Or do you just leave everything lying around till you need the space?
- This is getting personal... you already know I'm a mess... I'm sorry... but no, I've given myself places to put things so it's not an ordeal every time, so it's fine lol...
- 84.) Do you have a ritual before you start creating? Do you have a drink or some snacks?
- It's best to lock in than have too many distractions.
- 85.) How do feel about censorship in art? Where do you draw the line for inappropriate art?
- People can draw what they want, but if you're drawing like detailed misogynistic violent fetishes of little girls and someone says "This is some serial killer shit get out of my house" then well. Well... I think thats a normal human response.
- 86.) Do you censor your own art? Do you feel like you leave out details for it be socially accepted?
- If I had to self censor then that was my own problem for being a coward. Or I just wasn't good enough to justify drawing it to myself yet.
- 87.) Do you feel intimated with starting a new projects?
- Starting is just the first step.
- 88.) Are you scared of your art regressing? Do you think it's even possible to get worst at art?
- Progression isn't linear... I have def fallen behind my own ability before for extended periods of time. Not because I regressed but because I felt bad and didn't/coudln't give my full effort. If someone is regressing then it means something is wrong mentally. If you emerge out the other side it'll be ok.
- 89.) Do you frequently make compromises for your work? Does your art come out the way you envision them?
- It's kinda inevitable. I think I get closer to the ideal image I see in my head as I improve. I don't know if 100% is possible, and that's fine. There is a lot of data loss converting between the brain through your own skill out of your hands.
- 90.) How well do you manage your mistakes? Do you stress about them?
- I go insane and obsess about them over and over until my art becomes inbred and then go insane about my art being inbred and then after toiling in the labirynth for days into weeks into years I emerge out of the other side after a single moment of enlightenment that is so simple I could have learned it without doing all that.
- 91.) Do you make lists of things you'd like to make? Do you actual commit to them?
- Sometimes. It's nicer to write things down on paper than it is to write them digitally.
- 92.) What is your ultimate goal of your work? Like, is to tell a story, connect with others, or just to enjoy the process?
- I would like to communicate things that aren't limited by language. I would like people to feel what I want to get across. I would like people to resonate with me if they are capable of doing so, it neednt be everyone, just the people who can. Because there aren't many people like me. That sounds insane when I am just drawing weird girls. But yeah. Lol.
- 93.) What's something you've recently worked on that you're really proud of?
- I don't know. This website.
- 94.) Do you have any dream projects? Have you started on them?
- Yea. Will I finish though? Find out.
- 95.) Would you prefer unlimited money or unlimited time to make your projects?
- Days are always too short...
- 96.) Why do you create art?
- I think it came across already. Fun/relaxation/self-expression.
- 97.) Are you happy with what you create?
- No more or less than I am happy with myself..
- 98.) Do you think everyone should make art?
- I think everyone who says "I can't even draw a stickman lol" should at least try to draw that stickman so they can stop saying that. I want to see your stickman. The art of people who don't draw is great cos it's pure.
- 99.) What's advice you'd give to newer artist?
- Drawing a lot of bad things until you can draw good things is the point. If you are scared of drawing something bad you just have to keep drawing it bad until you are enlightened.
- 100.) When did you finish this? How'd you feel?
- Oh i'm finished. Lol. I did it on and off over a few days. It's the 5th of march 2026. I guess I had better draw more now in order to justify me writing all of this stuff.
